明代负责宫廷戏剧演出的两套班子,一套是教坊司,负责外廷演出,隶属礼部。一套是钟鼓司,负责内廷演出,隶属司礼监。二者虽内外有别而各司其职,但在业务上却又互有交通,其中在演出剧目上,即收藏于钟鼓司的内府本,其编创者到底是教坊司艺人独立所为,还是钟鼓司艺人也有参与,学界尚有分歧。事实上,通过内府本来源考述与界定、作者考论与推测,很大程度上内府本是以教坊司编创为主,而在内廷演出时,宦官艺人又有针对性的对教坊编演曲本进行了改编。此外,尚有宦官艺人根据特定情境临时新创曲目即兴编演,或针砭时弊以讽喻时政时人,或投帝王喜好借机谄媚邀宠。总之,藏于内府的曲本不只是"本朝教坊编演"的原有曲本,而是在此基础上,经内廷宦官艺人之手有所改编和新创。
