The strengthening of the power of the central government in the Song Dynasty caused serious drawbacks. To eliminate such drawbacks, many politicians and scholars advocated further enhancing the central power. However, ZhangZai holded that the only way to remove such malpractices was to adopt the way of separation of powers. In fact, it was a centralization of local powers which couldn't clear up those maladies brought about by the centralization of state power.
