Abstract

The system of Chinese communication studies mainly stems from Western classical theories and methods of communication. However, domestic scholars do not learn much about the frontiers of the western communication studies under the new media environment. This article visualizes the knowledge maps of two European communication journals, and analyzes the content of one of the journals. From the three aspects of co-citation, text and cited frequency, the author finds that the distinctive feature of European communication research is the trend of mediatization, with digital media, and political communication becoming new forefronts in new media environment. The method applied in European countries is mainly based on quantitative analysis, and “content analysis” is often listed in the keywords. Particularly, the mediatization is a comparatively distinctive theory and method rising from Europe in recent years.
